Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, many endearingly call the Big Mango or the City of Angels. This city is a favorite for travelers in South East Asia, especially Singaporeans. But if you are new to the city, it may seem slightly intimidating at first, but do not fret, our host Justin Foo brings us to some of his favorite places in Bangkok. With a curious mind, open heart, good walking shoes and a huge appetite travelling in Bangkok will be a memorable experience!

Ko Kret

You get to keep the cups!

Cut from from the rest of the province, this small island is 20 km north of central Bangkok. It is separated by the Chao Phraya River which requires a short boat ride to get there. It is known for its centuries-old temples, and a Mon community known for its handmade clay wares. You will be able to purchase the Mon community’s signature clay wares in the market, and you may also find some coffee stores that sells its coffee with a complementary handmade clay cup!

Thai Fish Cakes

Another must try food is the tort man pla, or fried fish cakes. It is prepared with curry, lemongrass, basil leaves and chill. The fragrant smell of these mouthwatering dishes is so strong, you can probably start to smell it when you get off the boat.

Go Ang

Better than Singapore’s Chicken Rice?

In the Singaporean food universe, many would say that the Hainanese Chicken Rice is right at the center of it. So when you come to Bangkok, you must try the Michellin awarded Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice! The restaurant takes no bookings, so the queue is exceptionally long, but once you tasted their signature chicken rice you will understand why! The rice is flavorful just like our own, but it is many would say it is less oily. The chicken is tender, juicy and it goes perfectly with their signature black sauce.

Chicken Blood Jelly?

One addition to your chicken rice meal that will separate it from ours back home is the chicken blood jelly! The chicken blood jelly may sound a bit exotic but it is sure to please your taste buds!

Lhong Tou Cafe

Innovative seating!

After a lunch at Go Ang, you may want to have an afternoon coffee. Lhong Tou Café is the perfect place to do so. Tucked in the middle Yaowarat, Lhong Tou is a café serving Chinese treats and coffee! Despite the café’s limited space, it packs plenty of tables by having a climbing frame and having diners stack up on one another. As you can see in the image below it is highly Instagrammable! You have to try their special Dirty (B85), it is a cup or cold milk topped with hot espresso. The contrast may seem jarring, but is rather a pleasant combination!

So if its your first time in Bangkok, remember to check out these places, and even if you have been there before you can always rediscover the places you love!
